Mother's Drug Use and Weaning: A Case Report

There are countless of benefits that children be exclusively breastfed during the first six months of life and keeping on breast-feeding with additional nutrients until two years old. However, mothers can early terminate breastfeeding for various reasons. Sometimes it can cause from the mother's drug use or it is due to the health personnel. In fact, there are a few drugs which require weaning and sometimes it is sufficient to limit breastfeeding or only observation the baby. In some circumstances, breastfeeding is really contraindicated due to mother's drug use. Breastfeeding counseling should be given to these mothers about restricting breastfeeding /weaning and baby nutrition. In this case report, it is discussed a mother who is weaning her baby because of she has had a hearth disease and she needs using certain drugs; her dilemma for either terminating breastfeeding or treatment process, by drawing attention to the breastfeeding approaches of the physician and the mother, and it was emphasized that counseling by breastfeeding counselors should be given in such cases.
