Prenatal Care Conditions ofWomen Who Delivered in an University Hospital And Influencing Factors

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influencing factors in antenatal care of women having delivery in Firat University Faculty of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study in which 298 women who had deliveries during January-March 2008, were applied questionnaires. The questionnaires were applied on the basis of face-to-face meeting. Data about quantity of antenatal care services (e.g. sufficient or insufficient), and quality of antenatal care services were determined.

RESULTS:

The average age of 298 women included in the study was 29.19±6.28. Among them, 44.3% were graduates of primary school. 87.6% of them were nuclear family while 12.4% of them were extended. While 31.2% of the women experienced 2 or 3 pregnancies, 15.5% experienced 6 and more pregnancies. All of the women included in the study received antenatal care. Of women, 57.0% were serviced sufficient antenatal care. As factors affecting the antenatal care quality and quantity score; age, residence, number of pregnancies, family type, women's education level, husband's education level, occupation of women, wanted pregnancies were defined (p<0.001). According to the antenatal care quality score, 7.0% of the pregnant women scored 1-2 points, 24.8% scored 3-4 points, 68.1% scored 5-6 points.Women informed that blood pressures of 98.0% of them were taken, the heart sounds of the infants were listened in 98.7%, blood cell were counted in 87.9% of them and 99.3% were applied ultrasonography at least once, during their current pregnancies.

CONCLUSION:

Prenatal care conditions in our University Hospital are better than the general overall conditions in Turkey. However, the medical personnel should be more conscious about the prenatal care services to improve the situation inTurkey.
